Escape rooms have been receiving more attention for use in education. Escape rooms are games in which teams solve multiple puzzles and challenges using clues, hints, and strategy to determine how to escape from a locked room. The implementation of escape rooms has the potential for increasing students’ mathematical understanding and engagement.
The unifying theme for this escape room was that all the challenges involved probability and statistics. The brief backstory involved a group of friends who are looking to get a good view of the fireworks on the 4th of July. The friends try to go to the roof of a building and end up needing to complete the escape room in order to leave the building. The backstory for the escape room is below.
For each room where students select a door, a question is provided to students along with three possible answer choices. The answer choices correspond to doors that students can select. If a wrong door is chosen then students must select another problem to solve before continuing. Students must correctly select all the right doors in order to get back to the elevator and complete the escape room.
Students are engaged while participating in escape rooms, have good mathematical discourse, and are able to persevere in problem solving.
